Home Health Aide Training In Connecticut

Home health aide training in Connecticut can be complex.

As a future home health aide, you need to know the regulations both on a Federal and State level. This will allow you to make the best career choice upfront, that can pay dividends in the future.

There are two sets of regulations one must know about when it comes to home health aide training in Connecticut. First, there are the Federal regulations, which are in effect for home health aides working at Certified Medicare Facilities also known as CMSs.

All home health aides working at a CMS must obtain 75 hours of training, including 16 hours of clinical training. In addition, home health aides working at a CMS must pass a competency exam.

Next, there are Connecticut specific requirements home health aides should know about, as the Federal regulations are only set for Certified Medicare Facilities.

Connecticut is one of the few states that require ALL home health aides to obtain 75 hours of training, in a training program that is approved by the Connecticut Department of Public Health. So, even if you work for a noncertified CMS as a home health aide, you still must get the 75 hours of training.

Finding HHA Training In Connecticut

The majority of home health aide training in Connecticut is done through home health agencies. Since home health aides are in such a high demand, the training is often free for new hires.

In addition, there are local community colleges and vocational schools throughout Connecticut that offer home health aide training. However, it must be approved by the Connecticut Department of Public Health or Connecticut Association for Home Care, Inc. to qualify.

Since home health aide certification courses are approved on a state basis, many of the biggest online colleges don’t offer a certified program that caters to home health aides specifically in the State of Connecticut. In addition, since home health aides must have clinical or on the job training, it’s best to look locally for an approved course.
